the two faces of january
A thriller centered on a con artist, his wife, and a stranger who flee Athens after one of them is caught up in the death of a private detective.
Directed by Hossein Amini, the writer of Drive. The Two Faces of January is a well-made and superbly-acted old-fashioned Hitchcockian thriller. Chester MacFarland, played by Viggo Mortensen, is a con artist who flees to the Athens with his wife Colette MacFarland, played by Kirsten Dunst. They meet Rydal, played by Oscar Isaac, a stranger interested in Colette that helps Chester after he kills a private investigator who was hired to track him. Viggo Mortensen is fantastic as Chester MacFarland. Oscar Isaac, previously knocking it out of the park in the Coen brothers masterpiece Inside Llewyn Davis, has become one of my new favourite actors. Isaac gives an excellent performance as Rydal. Kirsten Dunst was also good in her role as Colette. The Two Faces of January has some suspenseful moments. It's diverting enough but nothing unique nor is it a great film. The Two Faces of January is classy yet forgettable.
