the hobbit: an unexpected journey
A curious Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, journeys to the Lonely Mountain with a vigorous group of Dwarves to reclaim a treasure stolen from them by the dragon Smaug.
2012 has been a great year for movies. We've had The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and now The Hobbit, arguably the most anticipated movie of the year. Does it live up to the hype? absolutely. While it lacks the dark tone of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit is a breathtaking epic fantasy that puts most summer blockbusters to shame. An Unexpected Journey follows in similar footsteps to The Fellowship of the Ring, but is still a film that can stand on it's own, offering spectacular battle sequences and dazzling visuals. At nearly 3 hours long, some people will find the lengthy running time tiresome. For everyone else, you'll be so entertained that 170 minutes just whizzes straight past. I think that Martin Freeman makes a good Bilbo Baggins. I'm also please that some of the cast from Lord of the Rings return to reprise their roles. Including Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee and of course, the great Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Ian Holm and Elijah Wood make a brief appearance for the prologue. Andy Serkis plays Gollum like a pro. One of my favourite scenes being where Bilbo and Gollum are playing a game of riddles. It plays younger and lighter than Lord of the Rings, but The Hobbit is a mindblowing spectacle that anyone would be a fool to miss.
