it follows
After a young girl gets involved in a sexual confrontation, she is followed by an unknown force.
One of the creepiest, most unnerving horror films in recent years. It Follows is bound to divide general audiences, but I freaking loved it. The monster is a sexually transmitted disease. The effects are paranoia and eternally being followed by a terrifying supernatural force. The only cure is to pass it on by having sex with someone else. It's a simple yet clever concept that's brilliantly-executed.
I appreciate that director David Robert Mitchell focuses on creating mood and atmosphere and fleshing-out the characters. While Mitchell intentionally uses clichés to homage 70s and 80s horror, and borrows ideas from classics such as John Carpenter's Halloween, It Follows is unlike any horror I've seen. Maika Monroe is excellent as the beautiful heroine Jay. Proving her acting chops in The Guest and this, Monroe has a bright future ahead of her.
Disasterpiece's amazing electronic score builds tension and evokes a sense of dread. The cinematography and shot composition are fantastic. The pace starts to slow down in the second half. If the brisk pace of the first half was consistent throughout the entire film and the scares were more frequent, I would give It Follows an extra fifth star. Nevertheless, this is a terrific indie horror and one of the year's best films.
