pacific rim
When an alien attack threatens the Earth's existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace.
Pacific Rim delivers as fun popcorn entertainment. Sadly, I couldn't help but feel underwhelmed. What a shame. Guillermo Del Toro is a fantastic visual director. He knows how to make a gorgeous looking movie. The scenes with the Jaegers brawling with the Kaiju monsters are pretty spectacular. It's the human characters where Pacific Rim fails. Raleigh Becket, played by Charlie Hunnam, makes for a generic protagonist with a cliche back story about his brother who dies battling against a Kaiju. Robert Kazinsky plays Chuck Hansen, the a**hole whose a jerk all the time for no reason. Idris Elba was one of the best things about the movie, playing Stacker Pentecost, the commander of the Jaegers forces. One of the more interesting characters is Mako, the director of the Jaeger refurbishment project who gains a special bond with Becket. Also Charlie Day and Ron Perlman's characters were entertaining. Some of the dialogue was cheesy and almost laughable. The problem is that Guillermo Del Toro doesn't work as strongly with american actors as he does with Spanish actors. Don't get me wrong, this is not a bad movie. Pacific Rim is a visually dazzling spectacle, it just had the potential to be so much better.
