Ruby sparks
A novelist struggling with writer's block finds romance in a most unusual way: by creating a female character he thinks will love him, then willing her into existence.
Stranger Than Fiction meets (500) Days of Summer. Ruby Sparks is an enjoyable romantic comedy with a surprisingly dark tone. Directed by Johnathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the makers one of my all time favourite movies, Little Miss Sunshine. Paul Dano plays Calvin, a great novelist who writes about the female character, Ruby Sparks that comes to life without any logical explanation how. This isn't some wacky, over-the-top teen comedy like Weird Science, this is a dark human drama. The cast is superb. Zoe Kazan who plays Ruby and wrote the screenplay is extremely talented and with will probably be seen in a lot more after this. I though Paul Dano's performance was excellent. Antonio Banderas and Annette Benings were great playing Calvin's hippy parents. Movies usually f**k up making these types of characters way too cartoonish and ridiculous. With The Skin I Live In and this, Antonio Banderas has proven he has more range than just El Mariachi. It won't appeal to everyone, but Ruby Sparks is a solid indie romantic comedy and one of the most enjoyable movies of the year.
