the master
A Naval veteran arrives home from war unsettled and uncertain of his future - until he is tantalized by The Cause and its charismatic leader.
Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the greatest filmmakers of this generation. The Master is a masterpiece. Everything about this triumph is crafted with utmost skill. The cast is at the top of their game. Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie Quell, a World War II veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, getting into fights, having sex, and making drinks out of toxic chemicals. Phoenix's performance is phenomenal. He deserves to win Best Actor at the Academy Awards this year. You won't be able to keep your eyes off him. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is equally as great playing Lancaster Dodd, the charismatic leader of a cult known as The Cause. Fascinated and inspired by Freddie, Todd and Quell start an unlikely friendship. This is the best I've ever seen Amy Adams as Peggy Dodd, wife of Lancaster Dodd. Her performance is excellent. The way Paul Thomas Anderson directs is flawless. He brings this movie to life. Completely snubbed for Best Director. Also a fantastic score from Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood. The Master is definitely not for everyone. Casual moviegoers used to the crap Hollywood throws at them may find this confusing. But serious audiences wanting a challenging film will fall in love with it. Paul Thomas Anderson has made a beautiful and mesmerizing film. The Master is a new american classic.
